Community First
This is your neighborhood marketplace. The people you're trading with live near you.
🔍 How We Build Trust
GarageSale is designed as a community-first marketplace — most transactions happen between neighbors or people in the same local network, where reputation and familiarity already create a layer of natural trust.
Every seller on the platform has a publicly visible profile with their verified buyer and seller ratings, transaction history, and Karma Points (KP) earned from real completed trades. This makes reputation transparent and meaningful, unlike anonymous classifieds.
Reviews on GarageSale are dual — both buyer and seller leave feedback after each deal. You can always see how someone has traded before deciding to meet up.
🛡️ Safe Meetup Practices
The vast majority of GarageSale transactions are smooth, local, and friendly. That said, whenever you're meeting someone new, basic precautions go a long way:
- ✓Verify the item before paying. Don't hand over money until you've confirmed the item matches what was listed.
- ✓Meet in a safe, public place. A busy parking lot, coffee shop, or police station lobby works great.
- ✓Bring a friend for large purchases. If you're meeting for a big-ticket item, there's safety in numbers.
- ✓Tell someone where you're going. Let a friend or family member know you're meeting a seller/buyer.
- ✓Trust your instincts. If something feels off before or during the meetup, it's always okay to walk away.
- ✓Keep communication in-app. Messaging through GarageSale keeps a record and lets us help if something goes wrong.
⚠️ Protecting Yourself from Scams
GarageSale is designed for local, in-person trades — this naturally limits many common online marketplace scams. But no platform is immune, and it pays to stay alert:
- ✓Never pay in advance without seeing the item. Legitimate sellers don't ask for payment before a meetup.
- ✓Be sceptical of deals that seem too good to be true. A $1,500 bike for $50 is a red flag, not a bargain.
- ✓Watch for pressure tactics. "I have three other buyers" or "offer expires tonight" are classic pressure techniques — take your time.
- ✓Don't share financial information. GarageSale will never ask for your bank account, social security number, or wire transfer.
- ✓Check the seller's reviews and KP. New accounts with no history selling high-value items warrant extra caution.
Note on reviews: While our review system requires a completed transaction, no system is perfectly scam-proof. A bad actor can accumulate reviews before attempting a larger fraud. Always exercise your own judgement, especially for high-value trades.
🚩 Reporting & Moderation
See something that doesn't belong on GarageSale? You can flag any listing or user directly from the app. Our moderation team reviews every report and takes action — from removing a listing to suspending an account.
What to report:
- ✓Prohibited items (weapons, counterfeit goods, hazardous materials, illegal products)
- ✓Misleading or fraudulent listings
- ✓Suspected scam attempts or harassment
- ✓Accounts that appear to be bots or fake profiles
For urgent safety concerns or to escalate a report, email us directly at support@garage-sale.app.
📋 Community Standards
GarageSale is a marketplace built on respect — for neighbors, for items, and for the planet. We expect everyone on the platform to:
- ✓List items honestly — accurate photos, descriptions, and condition ratings
- ✓Honor agreed-upon prices and meetup commitments
- ✓Communicate respectfully, even when a deal falls through
- ✓Leave honest, fair reviews after each transaction
- ✓Only list items you actually own and intend to sell
Accounts that repeatedly violate community standards will be suspended. We'd rather have a smaller, trustworthy community than a large, chaotic one.
